A netizen pointed out an interesting fact, claiming that a family of 6 with a M40 salary shouldn’t still be considered as M40 as there are more mouths to feed. A single man with lesser income can actually be considered as such due to the less expenses he has.

This class separation was introduced before the pandemic, and has sparked numerous debates among netizens on Twitter. Financially shaming others by calling them ‘orang B40’ or calling out financially stable people as ‘kayangan T20’.

Others were saying that in Malaysia’s rural states the comparison is different as the cost of living is significantly lesser than in Kuala Lumpur. To classify others for their wealth without their surrounding circumstances may seem quite unfair to many as they’d be unable to get assistance from the government.
