Rosmah Mansor is out on bail and will not go to jail after she was sentenced to 10 years in jail and a monstrous record-breaking fine of RM970 million. However, her tears and her plea to rather ‘kill her’ rather than sentence her to 30 years of jailing did not win much sympathy in Malaysia.
It’s her lavish lifestyle and many expensive items that she apparently adored that meant the locals have little sympathy for her. An extraordinary hoard of expensive goods totalling RM1.1 billion was discovered during a police raid in 2018 including 423 watches, 500 designer handbags, 12,000 pieces of jewellery and a made-to-order Hermes Birkin bag worth RM1.6 million.
In the Billion Dollar Whale book, the authors wrote: She (Rosmah) couldn’t walk around in public with multi-million-dollar pieces of jewellery, so she’d spend hours pulling items out of a collection of safes around her home. “She’d just sit polishing them, trying them on, admiring them,” said a family member. “It was almost like my precious from Lord of the Rings.”
