Racist Dress Codes In A Local Malaysian University?

1 min read

It was brought up to attention when a netizen asked publicly whether it’s true that UKM does not allow graduates and their guests to wear the traditional Indian attire, the Sari. Furthermore, the Chinese traditional wear, Cheongsam, is also not allowed.

Apparently, the dress code has been removed from the university’s website. There were many that defended the university’s clothing guidelines saying that the other culture’s clothes are a lot more revealing when compared to the traditional Malay baju kurung.

Many assumed that people were mad that the university did not allow anyone to wear slippers and shorts. Ironically, people are mad due to the ban on traditional outfits. Universities are supposed to be a centre of open and learned minds, not a place where another culture is restricted.
