The student slapping by a volleyball coach that recently went viral could result in a criminal act if a police report is made and it could entail one year imprisonment and/or a fine of RM2,000 can be imposed if found guilty.
This is what a criminologist from Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM), Dr Zalmizy Hussin said to a local Malay portal and according to him, the offense is under Section 322 of the Penal Code for intentionally hurting or injuring another person. Even by just threatening and raising hands as if to slap can be a criminal act.
A criminal act
“If there is a report, the police will conduct an investigation and depending on the results, the perpetrator will be charged under a criminal offence. The meaning here is that the perpetrator will be subject to legal action if convicted. Whether the police prosecute the perpetrator or not, the police report that has been made can be used for the next step, which is a lawsuit.”
