China has seen a shocking population decline for the first time since 1961, which highlights a demographic crisis for the country. The National Bureau of Statistics reported that the population dropped by approximately 850,000 to 1.41175 billion by the end of 2022. This decline also lends support to predictions that India will surpass China as the world’s most populous nation this year.
Population Decline
Long-term projections from the United Nations indicate that China’s population may shrink by 109 million by 2050, which is more than three times the decline forecasted in 2019.
This has led domestic demographers to express concern that China will experience an aging population before becoming economically prosperous, which could slow the economy as revenues decrease and government debt rises due to increasing health and welfare costs.
