New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern steps down, announcing that she will not be seeking re-election and that her term will conclude no later than February 7th.
Ardern stated that after five-and-a-half years in office, she no longer has the energy to continue in the demanding role.

Her colleagues and the country were shocked by the sudden announcement, with Labour MP Kiri Allan saying “This morning has come as a shock. It wasn’t the day we expected to wake up to.” The Labour party caucus will vote on Sunday for the next Prime Minister.
