Awolola Oladayo Opeyemi, a Nigerian man, was sentenced to five years in jail for his involvement in a transnational love scam, which resulted in over S$550,000 in losses.
He confessed to recruiting two Singaporean women as money mules, and one of the victims, Suhaili Suparjo, shared her story. Suhaili met Awolola on Facebook in 2016 and was charmed by his “sweet gestures.”
They bonded over texts, calls, and video chats, and Suhaili was ready to live with him in Malaysia, defying her mother’s wishes. The couple’s first in-person meeting was at Johor Bahru City Square, where they had doughnuts and milkshakes.
Now, the 38-year-old woman faces five years of jail time after pleading guilty to three counts of working with others to receive the benefits of criminal conduct.
