Abby Choi, a Hong Kong socialite, had a personal net worth of over HK$100 million ($12.8 million) and was known for her involvement in charity work, particularly for stray animals.
Choi was allegedly murdered over a dispute concerning a property in the exclusive Kadoorie Hill neighbourhood in Ho Man Tin. After they murdered her, her body was brutally chopped into pieces.
She had promised to sell the property and resettle her former husband and his family elsewhere, but this move was met with resistance. Choi’s ex-husband Alex Kwong and three of his family members have been charged in connection to the case.
Choi was married to Kwong when she was 18 and promised to take care of his family even after they divorced three years later. Choi and her second partner, Chris Tam, who never officially registered their marriage, had two children together, while Choi had two children from her previous marriage. Tam has promised to take care of Choi’s four surviving children.
Choi’s chauffeur and former brother-in-law, Anthony Kwong, was supposed to meet her at Kadoorie Hill to pick up her daughter from school. He did not by then that the accused had probably chopped her body.
When Choi failed to show up, she was reported missing. CCTV footage showed two white Toyota 7-seater vehicles driving towards the village house, approximately one hour after her disappearance.
The suspects have been remanded without bail after their first court appearance. Alex Kwong, Anthony Kwong, and Kwong Kau, could face life imprisonment if found guilty of murder.
The court has adjourned the hearing to May 8. The tragic case has shocked many in Hong Kong, and Choi’s reputation as a kind and generous person has led to a large outpouring of grief and condolences from the public.
