Authorities apprehended a 24-year-old Indonesian beggar, a woman accompanied by her 17-day-old infant, while soliciting alms at Jamek Kampung Melayu Mosque. Despite her husband’s disapproval, she continued begging as a pastime.

She disclosed earning RM100 (S$30) daily, but spent RM40 (S$12) on Grab rides for transportation to and from the mosque. The woman admitted defying her husband’s wishes to earn extra money on impulse.
On Mar. 21, 16 “beggars” in Kuala Lumpur were rounded up by Malaysia’s Department of Social Welfare (JKM) in an operation that was part of the JKM’s efforts to curb the rampant spread of begging activities in Malaysia’s capital city. According to news reports the total amount of money collected by all beggars during the raid amounted to RM9,668.
