Fadhli Shaari, the Youth Chief of the Malaysian Islamic Party (PAS), has criticised the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) for replacing the chief minister of Melaka. He described the situation of the state administration as becoming a “cartoon.”
Melaka’s chief minister
The UMNO President, Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, confirmed that the party has nominated Ab Rauf Yusoh as the new chief minister to replace Sulaiman Md Ali, who is said to have resigned due to health problems. The decision has caused dissatisfaction among opposition leaders and UMNO members who claimed that Sulaiman had to give in to certain parties’ demands despite not wanting to relinquish his post.
Some opposition leaders have also demanded an explanation as to why Sulaiman resigned when BN had a two-thirds majority in the Melaka State Assembly. The swearing-in ceremony of the new chief minister is scheduled for today.
