Eid al-Fitr celebrations will begin today in Saudi Arabia and other Sunni-majority Muslim countries, while some countries with a majority Shia population have announced Saturday as the start of the holiday.
Saudi celebrating Hari Raya today
The Saudi Press Agency quoted a statement from the Royal Court, stating that tomorrow, Friday, marks the first day of Eid al-Fitr for this year, with Thursday being the last day of Ramadan based on the Islamic calendar. Other countries such as the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Qatar, Jordan, and Sudan have also announced that Eid al-Fitr will commence on Friday. In Lebanon, Sunni clerics have declared Friday as the start of the holiday, while some Shia leaders have announced Saturday.
Libya will celebrate Eid al-Fitr on Friday in the eastern part of the country and on Saturday in areas controlled by the government based in Tripoli. Iran’s Supreme Leader and Iraq’s top Shia authority have both stated that Eid al-Fitr will begin on Saturday in their countries. Oman, Pakistan, Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand will also start their celebrations on Saturday, while Saudi Arabia is expected to have a four-day holiday for Eid al-Fitr.
