Malaysians have been pretty vocal about the new phenomenon called “Begpackers” where western tourists are “begging” on the streets of Kuala Lumpur in order to fund their vacation. It appears to be a relatively new phenomenon as the criticisms towards it has been around since 2020.
Begpackers angering Malaysians
Netizens online state that these people are hurting people who are in actual poverty in this region. This is due to the fact that those in Southeast Asia who end up selling on the streets are those that are in actual dire situations. To quote one netizen, “poverty is not a choice.”
Southeast Asians are upset at this scene happening in their country. Furthermore, if Southeast Asians were to do the same the countries where these “begpackers” come from, they’d be deported without hesitation.
