The appeal for a pardon by former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak will be considered for discussion in a suitable meeting of the Pardons Board after it was not discussed during the last meeting on Friday. The Secretary of the Pardons Board for the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur, Labuan and Putrajaya, Datuk Seri Khairul Dzaimee Daud, said that the appeal will be considered in accordance with applicable laws and regulations at an appropriate time.
Najib Razak possibility of a pardon
The Pardons Board has the power to grant amnesty, postpone punishment, and relieve legal liability for offenses that have been tried by the military court and offenses committed within the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur, Labuan, and Putrajaya. The Yang di-Pertuan Agong also has the power to grant amnesty for other offenses committed within the country.
Najib is currently serving a 12-year prison sentence after his appeal to review his conviction and sentence for misappropriation of funds related to SRC International Sdn Bhd was rejected by the Federal Court in March. In his application, Najib sought to overturn the decision made by a panel of five Federal Court judges chaired by the Chief Justice of Malaysia, Tun Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat, on August 23, 2022.
