Anwar Ibrahim revealed that there will be an increase in electricity charges for households that exhibit excessive usage. However, he clarified that the new policy will not affect the lower-income (B40) and middle-income (M40) groups.
Households affected by electricity hikes
The rate adjustment will specifically target individual households with high electricity consumption, such as those using multiple air conditioners, who will be required to pay the actual cost without subsidies. Anwar made these statements after chairing the meeting of the National Economic Action Council (MTEN). The Prime Minister also mentioned that the government intends to maintain the existing electricity prices for the B40 and M40 groups but will implement changes for large factories.
Additionally, discussions in the MTEN meeting covered extending diesel subsidies to the freight transport sector to address issues of leakage and smuggling. Anwar highlighted the importance of establishing the Integrated Data Repository (Padu) as a central hub for socio-economic household information to enhance the effectiveness of subsidy targeting.
