The Memali tragedy of 1985, which claimed 18 lives, is now unfortunately being exploited on social media to target PAS and its president, Abdul Hadi Awang. This follows the decision by Hadi and other top PAS leaders to sign a pro-Malay proclamation advocated by Dr. Mahathir Mohamad.

The Memali tragedy refers to the clash between PAS supporters and preacher Ibrahim Mahmud, also known as Ibrahim Libya, and the police in Baling, Kedah, resulting in the deaths of 14 civilians and four police officers. PAS blames Mahathir for the incident, while Mahathir claims Hadi is responsible for inciting violence through the “Amanat Hadi” in 1981.
This blame game is now being used on social media to criticize Hadi and PAS for allegedly trying to appease Mahathir by signing the “Malay Proclamation.” However, false information and manipulated videos are being circulated, misrepresenting the situation.
