Singapore is set to build caverns – underground indeed – to store construction materials. Meannwhile, Malaysians are arguing over highways that will pass on their heads. And they are fighting over tunnels and Islands that will impact the environment.

Construction Materials

Authorities are currently exploring the construction of a large underground cavern facility in Gali Batu, situated near Mandai and in close proximity to an inactive granite quarry. The purpose of this facility would be to store construction material, thereby freeing up valuable land above ground for alternative purposes.

To evaluate the viability of utilizing underground caverns in Gali Batu for the storage of aggregate—a coarse raw material comprised of sand, stone, and other components used in construction, including cement production—JTC Corporation has initiated the engagement of consultancy services. This effort constitutes a “high-level, conceptual study” aimed at assessing the feasibility of implementing such a storage solution in the area.
