It appears that there is a possibility of having a number of entertainment options in Malaysia that will be taxed at a 25% rate. However, for obvious reasons, Malaysians are unhappy hearing this. The Arts, Live Festival, and Events Association (ALIFE Malaysia) expressed concern about the newly introduced 25% entertainment tax affecting city events.

They acknowledged the previous tax exemption by Selangor but cited a lack of clear communication from Kuala Lumpur City Hall and Selangor’s authorities regarding the tax’s details.

Netizens react to the new possible entertainment tax

X users state that alcohol and tobacco are already heavily taxed by the government. There are only a number of ways that the rakyat can enjoy things out of their working lives. Taxing leisurely items further may not lead to a happy population, stated by the netizen.

Others are shocked at the new tax. Some state that this will hurt the local arts scene even further. Furthermore, there are claims that these organizers would find it hard to make profits, especially when there are more taxes for them to pay.
