During the latest Premier League season’s opening weekend, football fans were exposed to 11,000 gambling messages, highlighting the pervasive betting imagery in the sport. While clubs pledged to ban gambling firms from shirt sponsorships by 2025.
Gambling messages overwhelming Premier League fans
Several firms are questioning its effectiveness due to the relentless exposure to other gambling ads. Concerns include the volume of messages regarding gambling, insufficient labeling of social media content as ads, and inadequate promotion of safer gambling.
Over six televised matches in the opening weekend, viewers encountered 6,966 gambling messages, with only a fifth accompanied by safer gambling messages. The study also revealed that 1,902 gambling ads were seen 34 million times on social media.
