In Malaysia, there has been a troubling increase in scams involving “black magic” in recent times. In one incident in Johor Bahru, a 72-year-old woman narrowly avoided falling victim to such a scam. Three strangers approached her at a local wet market, initially asking for information about a physician for a supposed medical issue.

They eventually led her into a secluded area, where they manipulated her into revealing personal details and handing over valuables for a ritual to dispel bad luck. Fortunately, she managed to excuse herself due to a stomachache, avoiding becoming a victim. However, not everyone has been as fortunate, with some losing savings and jewellery in similar scams.
