The recent viral posts about the stall selling nasi lemak and nasi kandar “babi” which means pork, has sparked an intense debate between the liberals and conservatives in the country. Conservatives state that these traditional foods should not be touched with non-Halal items. However, liberals state that locals revamp foreign food all the time here.
Netizens angry over nasi lemak “babi”
Several X users state that this is misleading. However, others state that this is not misleading at all, as the store clearly states that their food includes pork. The sensitivity of non-Halal foods are quite high in Malaysia, but it is the same worldwide for countries that have religions with strict dietries.
Another X user with South Asian origins states that the use of pork in Nasi Kandar is offensive to them. However, others debate that Nasi Kandar means mixed rice and that it does not have to necessarily be a specific dish. Regardless, users on both sides of the spectrum are upset at the situation.
