Opposition Members of Parliament walked out en masse during the first day’s session at noon in protest against the decision to refer Wan Saiful Wan Jan to the Parliamentary Rights and Freedoms Committee. The protest drew attention as it occurred just a minute before Speaker Johari Abdul adjourned the session for lunch.
Earlier, the Dewan Rakyat passed a motion to refer Wan Saiful (PN-Tasek Gelugor) to the committee over allegations he made in late February. He claimed he was offered nearly RM2 million to support Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and that his ongoing corruption case could be dropped if he switched allegiance.
The motion was presented by Law Minister Azalina Othman Said and was approved by voice vote. As Johari announced the decision, PN MPs walked out.
