Nearly 17,000 Malaysian Teens Pregnant Out of Wedlock Since 2020

Malaysia faces alarming youth health challenges, with over 1,000 university students infected with HIV between 2020 and 2024, and nearly 17,000 teenagers recorded pregnant out of wedlock in the same period. Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri revealed that these cases form part of 41,842 pregnancies among teens aged 19 and below, with Malays accounting for about half.

Other affected groups include Iban (11%), Orang Asli (9%), Chinese (5%), and Indian (3%). The ministry plans to strengthen reproductive health education, counselling, and community support to curb the issue, stressing prevention and awareness as critical steps forward.
