About 2 million vehicles expected in Penang as Chinese New Year travel surges

Malaysia’s northern state of Penang is preparing for an unprecedented surge in traffic, with authorities expecting about two million vehicles to enter and exit the state from Feb 15 to Feb 20 in conjunction with Chinese New Year holiday travel and the upcoming Ramadan season. Traffic police have launched Op Selamat 25/2026 ahead of the festive period.

State police said 380 officers and personnel from the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) will be on round-the-clock duty, supported by 350 patrol units and other agencies, focusing on deterring congestion and ensuring road safety at major routes and identified blackspots. 

Traffic hotspots include the Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway, Jalan Ayer Itam-Paya Terubong and Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah. Motorists were urged to plan travel times strategically and obey traffic regulations throughout the six-day safety operation.
