The Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Ministry (NRES) is intensifying efforts to curb the surge in wildlife roadkill, with over 2,300 cases recorded nationwide between 2020 and 2024. The East-West Highway, connecting Gerik and Jeli, has been identified as a major hotspot.

Working with PERHILITAN and WWF-Malaysia, NRES discussed urgent measures during a High-Level Roundtable on July 17, including stricter laws, eco-friendly road signs, and driver awareness campaigns. Long-term strategies focus on habitat restoration and forest connectivity.
Marking World Elephant Day, these initiatives align with the National Elephant Conservation Action Plan (NECAP 2.0) and partnerships with EMPTA to promote safer driving in ecological zones.
