The MACC has been the talk of the town last week after Bloomberg released an expose that has rocked the nation. Now Zaid Ibrahim, a lawyer and former de-facto Law Minister under Najib Razak is saying: “All the talk about suspending Azam Baki and setting up a Cabinet Committee to find out what’s gone wrong with MACC is a waste of time. The rot is deep Except for its 700 million building, everything about MACC needs a complete overhaul. Its laws, the scope of responsibilities and duties, plus how to appoint its Chief Commissioner, require a closer scrutiny It was flawed from its inception.”
MACC needs a complete overhaul
He says the laws guiding the MACC today is crafted from the 911 disaster under pressure from the USA. It is about money laundering, tougher fines, bank account freeze etc. He also says in all countries it is the police that should have the powers to investigate corruption cases. “England and Singapore have strong and effective anti-corruption and serious frauds division, but they are all part of the Police force. The police are the mother of investigative and preventive organisations in the country.”
