AI Scams Now Targeting Hoteliers and Travellers Spark Calls for Government Action

Industry players call for stronger regulation and protection against AI-powered scams targeting hoteliers and travellers. Malaysia Budget & Business Hotel Association president, Dr. Sri Ganesh Michiel, emphasised the need for government intervention in regulating online travel agencies (OTAs) like Airbnb, particularly those overseas.

Although rare in Malaysia due to cooperation between hoteliers and OTAs, AI scams remain a concern. Michiel stressed the importance of clear procedures for collecting personal information and preventing fake reservations, fictitious accommodations, and phishing schemes. Booking.com has reported a rise in global phishing attacks on the hospitality sector, underscoring the need for strict policies.
