A solitary bottlenose dolphin named Delle, observed in Denmark’s Svendborgsund channel, has captured scientists’ attention for his unusual behavior: talking to himself. Using recording devices, researchers documented over 10,800 distinct sounds, including whistles and clicks, traditionally associated with social interactions among dolphins. Despite being alone, Delle produced three distinct signature whistles, which are typically unique to each individual and used for communication. Cetacean biologist Olga Filatova suggested Delle’s vocalizations might stem from loneliness or mimic human behavior, like laughing alone. The findings highlight dolphins’ complex social needs and raise questions about how isolation affects their behavior and well-being.
