In 1962, a Boeing 707 flying as American Airlines flight 1 was taking off from Idlewild airport, now known as JFK airport. Unfortunately, the aircraft crashed, killing all 95 people on board. A manufacturing defect in the autopilot system caused the accident.
Apparently, the autopilot system led to an uncontrolled rudder movement and it was surprising for many as the aircraft was relatively new at that time.
The tragedy of American Airlines flight 1
The flight number is still operated to this day, serving the New York – Los Angeles route. It has been the designated call sign number for said route since 1936. There have been a total of three crashes under said flight number, one in 1936, 1941 and 1962.
Witnesses on a Mohawk Airlines plane saw the Boeing crash into the bay, causing a huge explosion, water splash, and fire. Long Island residents felt the explosions, shaking their homes.
