Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim firmly reiterated that Bahasa Melayu’s status as the official language under the Federal Constitution remains non-negotiable. Speaking after Friday prayers in Langkawi, he warned that recent demands to prioritise English or recognise the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) must never sideline the national language.
Bahasa Melayu mastery
“Bahasa Melayu must be elevated as the language of knowledge, technology and AI, mastered by all Malaysians regardless of mother tongue,” he stressed. Anwar welcomed strengthening other languages only after Bahasa Melayu proficiency is secured, including in international schools. He cautioned that proposals focusing solely on one race or language risk stirring sensitivities.
