Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim denied claims that Malaysia has relinquished its rights over the disputed area in the Sulawesi Sea, clarifying that negotiations with Indonesia are ongoing and involve the Sabah state government.

He emphasised that any maritime boundary agreement or oil and gas cooperation must comply with legal and historical frameworks, including the 1982 UNCLOS, and most importantly, have Sabah’s approval.
Anwar expressed disappointment over allegations of secrecy and insisted his administration will not surrender even an inch of Sabah’s land or waters. Any future cooperation will be based on joint development, similar to arrangements with Vietnam and Thailand.
