Anwar Proposes Smartphone Ban for Students Under 16

Following a series of violent school incidents—including a gang rape in Malacca and a fatal stabbing in Bandar Utama—Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has proposed banning smartphone use among students under 16.

Citing the influence of social media and online games, Anwar said the measure aims to curb bullying and youth violence. He urged school leaders not to conceal misconduct, warning that such actions amount to protecting a crime. 

The Education Ministry is reviewing reforms, and Anwar stressed the need for full cooperation from principals, teachers, and parents. Studies on the smartphone ban are ongoing, with reference to similar global policies.
