Recently, netizens on Twitter have mentioned that the Highways in Malaysia are very clogged, especially in areas like Petaling Jaya, Central Kuala Lumpur and Ampang. Their concerns were that a lot of people may not make it for buka puasa [Iftar] on that day.
Some netizens mentioned that sometimes they feel like the billions of ringgit spent on MRT, LRT and KTM infrastructure is not even helping. Some were also questioning if highways are actually helpful for our cities. A study done in The United States shows that highways actually don’t help the flow of traffic at all.
Whenever a new highway is built or extended, more people would use the highway and the jams will continue again. Thus defeating the purpose of extending or building new ones. The study mentioned that beefing up public transportation and encouraging more walking and cycling would greatly help reduce traffic. Similar to what is done in many European cities.
