Malaysian Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan emphasized the need for a ceasefire. ASEAN has struggled to implement a peace plan agreed in April 2021. The junta faces widespread opposition and has repeatedly postponed elections.
The United States and analysts view any elections under the junta as a sham. Over 3.3 million people have been displaced by the conflict. ASEAN ministers also called for the release of Aung San Suu Kyi.
