ASEAN: Myanmar Elections Must Wait Until Ceasefire Achieved

ASEAN and its dialogue partners have agreed that holding elections in Myanmar is premature amid ongoing conflict. Instead, the focus remains on implementing ASEAN’s Five-Point Consensus (5PC), which prioritises ending violence, providing humanitarian aid, and promoting inclusive political dialogue.

Malaysian Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan warned that elections lacking full participation would worsen instability. ASEAN continues to urge Myanmar’s military to engage with all parties and accept a comprehensive ceasefire.

The regional bloc maintains that sustainable peace and national unity must come first before considering a democratic process. Special envoys will continue engaging stakeholders to support this goal.
