SINGAPORE: SingHealth Polyclinics (SHP) scientists have found that commonly used metered-dose asthma inhalers emit high levels of hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) propellants, worsening air pollution. Clinical Associate Professor Tan Ngiap Chuan said patients using these inhalers in 2023 produced an average of 140kg of CO₂ emissions annually — equivalent to driving a petrol car 97km.

In contrast, dry powder inhalers generated about 121kg of CO₂ per user yearly. Prof Tan urged better asthma management and a shift toward dry powder inhalers, which rely on natural inhalation instead of HFC propellants, to reduce both emissions and environmental harm.
