Bishop Sebastian Francis of Penang has been chosen as Malaysia’s second Roman Catholic cardinal by Pope Francis.

The 71-year-old will be among 21 new cardinals appointed in a ceremony at the Vatican on September 30. Eighteen of the new cardinals are under 80 years old and eligible to participate in the election of the next pope.

The remaining three, who are over 80, were recognized for their long service to the Church. Bishop Francis, who became a priest in 1977, has been serving as the bishop of Penang since 2012 and is actively involved in various Catholic organizations.
