Cambodia: Heatwave cause of ammo blast that killed 20 soldiers

A blistering heatwave in Southeast Asia exacerbated an ammunition explosion at a Cambodian army base, killing 20 soldiers and injuring several others. The defence ministry attributed the incident to old and faulty weapons detonating due to the scorching temperatures.

Rebellious soldiers or terrorism were ruled out as causes. Cambodia, like its neighbors, has been grappling with intense heat, with temperatures soaring to 43 degrees Celsius in some areas. Deadly munitions accidents are not uncommon in the country, which is still dealing with the remnants of past conflicts.
