There is chaos in Brazil with thousands of supporters of far-right former president Jair Bolsonaro invading the Brazilian Congress and other government buildings on Sunday. The crowds were clad in Brazilian flags and national colours and overpowered police.

Some managed to enter the empty Senate chamber, while others gained access to the Supreme Court and the Presidential Palace, severely damaging these important government structures. Bolsonaro, who is presently in Florida, has denounced the demonstrations and dismissed claims that he played a part in inciting the violence from newly elected President Lula.

After the attack, Lula travelled to the capital to examine the damage done to Congress and made a promise to identify those responsible.
