NEW YORK: A recent US Navy test of autonomous drone boats off California saw one vessel stall from a software glitch before being struck by another, which vaulted over its deck and crashed into the water, Reuters reports. The collision involved boats built by defence tech rivals Saronic and BlackSea Technologies. Weeks earlier, a separate BlackSea vessel capsized a support boat, throwing its captain into the sea. Both incidents highlight challenges facing the Pentagon’s US$1 billion Replicator programme, launched in 2023 to rapidly deploy thousands of drones for military use. The first systems are expected to be announced this month.
