The government is considering a proposal to place cigarettes alongside non-halal products in stores. Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Mohd Na’im Mokhtar will discuss the matter with Domestic Trade Minister Armizan Mohd Ali. The proposal comes in light of a fatwa issued in 1995 prohibiting Muslims from using cigarettes. Na’im stated that while the fatwa exists, decisions about product placement fall under the Domestic Trade Ministry’s jurisdiction. Non-halal products like alcohol and pork are usually placed in separate sections, and cigarettes are currently sold behind the counter, restricted to buyers aged 18 and above.
