New: Civil Servants Appointed on Contract Basis Starting February 1

The Malaysian government announced the implementation of contract-based appointments for civil servants starting February 1, aiming to strengthen the public service retirement system and reduce long-term fiscal burdens. The initiative, part of legislative amendments, seeks to enhance the efficiency of the public sector. The announcement came from the Director-General of the Public Service, Datuk Seri Wan Ahmad Dahlan Abdul Aziz, through an official circular.

Civil Servants on contract

“The government, through a cabinet meeting on July 12, 2023, decided to introduce a new method for the permanent appointment of civil servants. The cabinet agreed that during this interim period before the enforcement of this new method, the recruitment of civil servants to permanent positions will be carried out via a contract of service (COS) system effective from 2024,” he says in the circular.
