The Malaysian Court of Appeal has ordered Sarawak Report editor Clare Rewcastle-Brown, publisher Chong Ton Sin, and printer Vinlin Press to collectively pay RM300,000 (around US$64,000) in damages to Sultanah of Terengganu, Sultanah Nur Zahirah, for defamation. Remember, Rewcastle-Brown broke the 1MDB story that got Najib Razak to go to prison.

The court reversed the High Court’s decision and deemed the statement in the book “The Sarawak Report-The Inside 1MDB Exposé” as defamatory toward the Sultanah. Rewcastle-Brown admitted an honest mistake in a 2018 statement but did not issue an apology before the legal proceedings. The court ruled that the statement aimed to subject the Sultanah to hatred or contempt. Rewcastle-Brown, Chong, and Vinlin Press were also directed to pay RM120,000 in costs to the Sultanah.
