The government is considering implementing congestion charges in Kuala Lumpur to reduce traffic and encourage public transport use, said Federal Territories Minister Dr. Zaliha Mustafa. The proposal is part of the Kuala Lumpur Traffic Master Plan 2040, aimed at easing peak-hour gridlock. A feasibility study by the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research and the Malaysian Green Technology Corporation is underway, with findings to be presented to the Cabinet. Traffic congestion costs the economy RM20 billion annually, and Zaliha emphasized that improving public transport is essential to creating a more efficient city without burdening the public.
