The High Court vacated scheduled trial dates for former Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s sedition case following a joint application by defense counsel and the prosecution pending a fresh review by the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC). Lead defense counsel Amer Hamzah Arshad informed the court that new material developments warrant a fresh representation to the AGC, requesting adequate time for prosecutorial review to avoid premature trial proceedings. Deputy Public Prosecutor Azlina Rasdi raised no objections to the adjournment.
Trial Dates
The charge originates from remarks uttered during the Nenggiri state by-election campaign in Gua Musang in August 2024 regarding the appointment process of the Prime Minister following the 15th General Election. Muhyiddin was charged under Section 4(1)(b) of the Sedition Act 1948, which carries a maximum fine of RM5,000, up to three years’ imprisonment, or both upon conviction. The case was initially transferred from the Gua Musang Sessions Court to the High Court. Proceedings remain on hold while the AGC evaluates the new representation.
