On July 5, the nation was shocked by the suicide of local TikToker Rajeswary Appahu (Esha), who had endured months of cyberbullying. Swift police action led to the arrest of several suspects, including Shalini Periasamy, fined RM100 for insulting remarks on TikTok.

Another suspect, B Sathiskumar, pleaded guilty to obscene remarks but denied subjecting Esha’s mother to humiliation. Bail was set at RM18,000 for each charge. The case is scheduled for mention on August 16.
Furthermore, many are criticising TikTok for not properly screening through individuals cyberbullying others. Some are calling for a ban of the social media platform.
