Today, a handyman named Mohd Amir Hamzah, 32, was brought before the Magistrates’ Court on charges of murdering his wife Rubiah Sabtu, 41. He hit her with an iron mallet in their home in Kampung Besol, Bukit Besi on April 5.

He was charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code and faces the death penalty if found guilty. During the court hearing, he nodded in understanding, but no plea was recorded. The court set June 13 for the re-mention of the case and the chemical report. The prosecution was led by Deputy Public Prosecutor Nur Athirah Hashim, while the accused was represented by a lawyer from the National Legal Aid Foundation, Hafizul Faris Che Razlan.
Death Penalty Sought
The couple had a three-month-old daughter, and the victim had six children from her previous marriage. Dungun District Police Chief Superintendent Baharudin Abdullah speculated that financial problems might have been a contributing factor to the incident. Malaysia has ended mandatory death penalty.
