Media and civil society groups have urged the Home Ministry to clarify proposed amendments to the Printing Presses and Publications Act 1984 (PPPA), citing potential threats to media freedom. Reported changes include reinstating a three-year mandatory media licence renewal and broadening the definition of “publication” to cover digital content, sparking fears of tighter regulation over online platforms. Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail has temporarily paused the amendments for stakeholder consultations. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim assured the press (SIC) his administration is open to criticism and committed to ensuring media-related laws align with democratic principles and freedoms.
