KUALA LUMPUR, June 26, 2025 — Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim staunchly defended the judiciary’s independence during his keynote at the Asean Madani Leadership Programme Symposium, rejecting claims of interference in recent court decisions involving politicians. While emphasizing judicial autonomy, Anwar expressed disagreement with certain discharge not amounting to acquittal (DNAA) rulings in corruption cases, stating, “I utterly disagree with some decisions, but they are made by the courts.” He criticized detractors who condemn him regardless of outcomes, asking, “Do you want a dictator?” Anwar stressed that judges must adjudicate independently, not based on personal or public pressures.
