Ayer Kuning Signals Growing Discontent with Anwar’s PH Government

1 min read

SINGAPORE, April 30, 2025 — A pattern in Perak’s Ayer Kuning by-election has raised concerns for Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s Pakatan Harapan (PH)-led government, as non-Malay PH supporters appear to be shifting allegiance. In the by-election they shifted to PSM (6% vote share), the best since the party left Anwar’s coalition in 2013. This reflects frustration with PH’s unmet promises, analysts say. With 43 of Malaysia’s 222 parliamentary seats decided by margins smaller than PSM’s Ayer Kuning tally, PSM or a third force could act as a spoiler, potentially swinging seats to Perikatan Nasional (PN) in future elections.
