Doctors Slam MACC’s BMI-Based Promotion Policy

Health experts across Malaysia agree that Body Mass Index (BMI) alone is not a complete indicator of overall health. Following MACC Chief Azam Baki’s announcement that officers with a BMI over 27 will be denied promotion starting January 2026, doctors and wellness professionals have expressed concern. 

Doctors Slam MACC’s BMI-Based Promotion Policy

They argue BMI does not account for muscle mass, fat distribution, or metabolic health. Experts recommend using additional indicators like waist circumference, blood markers, and fitness assessments. 

While promoting a healthier lifestyle is commendable, experts warn against punitive policies that could cause stigma and overlook individuals who are healthy despite a high BMI.
